Digitalization is changing day-to-day research practices across all fields of academic inquiry. This advancement leads to a growing number of research data collected, processed, analyzed, published and archived, almost exclusively, in digital systems. In this context, the term Research Data Management (RDM) refers to a range of activities and topics concerning the handling of digital research data. Ever wondered what a data management plan is and why care to write one? Ever been unable to open a file, find the most recent version of a file, or worse, lost an important file? Regardless if small or big and transdisciplinary, all projects can generate enough (digital) research data to become confusing and susceptible to loss. In the first part, this workshop provides foundational knowledge and best practices for handling digital research data. The second part builds on this with a practical introduction to tools and data structures used in the TRR259.

In this workshop, we’ll explore how we can better focus on our audience. We’ll investigate the challenges audiences can have in processing and understanding presentations. And we’ll practice using the tools that can combat these challenges. During the workshop you’ll have the chance to apply those tools to your presentation. Everyone will get the chance to present to a partner, and we’ll finish by seeing a selection of your presentations. In the workshop, we’ll be looking at: • How audiences really make decisions • How to make it memorable • What are the attention magnets? • Slides: where they help; where they harm; how to make them work for you. • How belief and memory are linked and what that means for you • Demonstrations and Analogies • Statistics that stick • The language of power • The ancient art of rhetoric • What makes your audience care and therefore act? You’ll see examples from real presentations, all of which won funding or investment.

Academia is an ultramarathon that we try to run as a sprint. We quickly run out of time and energy and can experience waning motivation, burnout, and a sense of failure. Although the environment certainly plays a role, we as individuals can address the way we approach academia to buffer us against stress and burnout, worry and fear, and the toxic competition we are often surrounded by. A healthier approach to research is possible! • We address the self-sabotaging thought processes that underlie perfectionism, imposter syndrome • or worry and learn to reframe them. • We identify maladaptive coping strategies (e.g. avoidance and procrastination) and explore more • effective (and healthier) strategies. • We discuss the need to fill your bucket and why balance in our lives is essential to creativity, insight, • motivation, and our ability to deal constructively with feedback and rejection.

The workshop Entering Leadership provides a structured insight in basic leadership questions. What is „leadership“? What tasks are related to leadership positions? Entering such a position means to enter a new social role and to define how we as individuals want to interpret this role. Role theory allows to describe and understand the different dynamics related to leadership. Additionally, we will explore leadership tasks and styles and create links to practice of leadership. The last part of the workshop addresses difficulties young leaders have to face quite often. If young leaders enter established and experienced teams there might start some struggle about being accepted as leaders - a process some authors call status games.

Scientists have to be able to present their arguments in a precise and convincing way. However, when writing their papers, many scientists rely on intuition rather than on concrete methods. This course provides participants with all the techniques they need to know in order to state their arguments precisely, correctly and convincingly. The course starts with the basic concepts of reasoning and logic: validity and soundness of arguments, deductive and inductive reasoning, common types of logical inferences. From these basics, we derive useful techniques for argumentation in scientific texts. Throughout the course participants get the chance to apply the acquired skills directly to their own work, to get feedback on already existing manuscripts and to produce new texts on their research topics.

„Wow, that presenter is so good in front of an audience. If only that were easier for me!“ Being a good speaker is often just question of developing a set of skills and techniques. The use of voice and body language, an effective presentation structure and the dynamic use of language require awareness and practice. The workshop helps to identify and explore these requirements, from self-reflection to self-assurance and long-term excellence. This is an activity-based workshop led by a professional trainer with a background in theater whose expertise is in helping the speaker effectively communicate the importance and relevance of the work and the core message of the talk. Participants with presentation experience can strengthen the narrative, the emotional tone, and the physicality of their talk in order to define and support the speaker’s own dynamic style.
