Importance of hyaluronan-rich extracellular matrix for inflammation and structural remodeling in abdominal aortic aneurysms

Extracellular matrix (ECM) components, especially hyaluronan (HA), play a decisive role in aortic diseases. However, the role of the HA-rich matrix in aortic abdominal aneurysms (AAA) is yet unclear. Therefore, it is proposed to determine aortic HA and functionally related ECM components in murine and human AAA and to unravel the specific role of HA synthase (Has)3 in AAA. For this purpose, immune and ECM responses will be studied in Has3-deficient mice and interventional approaches either inhibiting or augmenting vascular HA matrix will be tested in AAA models.
