DESCRIPTION:Do academic spaces exist outside of power relations? We offer
a place for participants to reflect on what gives people power (or not) an
d how the oppressive systems we live in shape our means of researching\, t
eaching and learning with one another. The urgency for these conversations
to happen is backed up by a recent survey (2022) that revealed high rates
of discrimination reported by students. The workshop holds space for pers
onal experiences in academia\, but also perspectives on what needs to happ
en for uni to be antiracist\, antisexist\, anticlassist and antiableist.

DESCRIPTION:In the lecture\, possible causes of the so-called imposter syn
drome – the recurring thought that one is simply not good enough for the
current position and cannot fulfill the associated tasks – will be pres
ented. The main thesis is that the imposter syndrome is based on 'thought
errors'. 'Thought errors' are thoughts that appear helpful and benevolent
on the one hand but produce a negative effect on closer inspection. The ai
m of the lecture is to give the audience a deeper understanding of how the
imposter syndrome develops and to share strategies on how to deal with it
 .

DESCRIPTION:Academic life can be stressful\, overwhelming and frustrating:
  lots to do\, rejections\, revisions\, teaching\, fixed-term contracts plu
s grant and job applications. Against the backdrop of cognitive and neuros
cience research\, we explore what causes these negative emotions. In a sec
ond step\, we consider options for dealing with and handling negative emot
ions. Sounds touchy-feely – so why bother? Because the greater your capa
city to handle negative emotion\, the greater your levels of success – i

DESCRIPTION:“I thought we were on the same page? Now what is he talking
about…?”\nHow a person says and hears something may well be different
to the way in which it was intended to be said and heard. How a person per
ceives himself may be different to how others perceive him. Such contradic
tory perceptions can lead to confusion\, disagreement\, and even conflicts
. In the increasingly intercultural world of science and academic research
\, there are many occasions for misunderstanding. This workshop focuses on
the team\, on communication and on cultural influences as the most signif
icant aspects for being heard and understood within your own working commu

DESCRIPTION:Success in academia does not depend on academic merits alone.
The way how\nacademics communicate and lead is equally important. The obje
ctive of this workshop\nis to create an initial understanding of this core
competence - with a particular focus\non gender aspects of leadership sty
les.\nThe seminar introduces the concept of “vertical” and ”horizont
al” communication (D.\nTannen\, P. Modler) in order to understand why -
in general perception - men and\nwomen communicate and act differently in
a professional setting. Women often feel\nthat they do not succeed profess
ionally in a similar way as men do. Whereas men\nunderestimate the need to
empower others\, women leaders very often hesitate to\napply “status”
and “territory” as efficient tools of leadership! The workshop helps\
nparticipants to understand their own style of communication with the ulti
mate aim of\nfinding the right balance and of employing the right approach
  in the given context.
